In the Galapagos, kayaking may be a genuinely fantastic experience. In addition to getting up close and personal with the marine creatures, you can take in the islands’ stunning scenery from a distance. Even though kayaking may seem like a fantastic experience, only some become expert kayakers right once. It requires expertise and a little skill, just like everything else. Don’t worry; we’ve provided excellent advice to help you get the most out of your first kayaking trip in the Galapagos.

Galapagos islands activities: kayaking
One of the activities guests can enjoy with Yacht La Pinta is kayaking

Safety First

Make sure your personal life jacket is on before hopping in your kayak. All our guests onboard Yacht La Pinta have access to these at all times. Since helmets are only required when kayaking on rocky waters, one is unnecessary.

There’s a reasonable risk you will drop your phone or camera in the water because of the occasionally rough waters and the constant strain of using the paddles. Feel free to bring your GoPro camera or any other waterproof model you own, but always keep it connected to your body, just in case. Don’t be afraid to ask your guide to snap a photo of you from the protection of the boat or dingy.

Additionally, remember to apply lots of sunblock cream before boarding the kayak. We suggest wearing one if you don’t mind getting your t-shirt wet. It will undoubtedly shield your shoulders and back. The equator’s intense sun burns skin more quickly than at other latitudes. Sunglasses and a cap are also advised. Our packing list for the Galapagos Islands ensures you have everything you need for your trip.

  • You are paddling a correctly adjusted kayak, which results in increased comfort and efficiency. Consider keeping three ports of contact open at all times: Your lower back presses tightly against the seat’s bottom. Adjust your rear to sit upright and not stooped over in the cockpit.
  • Your footballs pressed up against the foot wedges. Make sure your knees are slightly bent by adjusting your feet.
  • Make sure your knees are firmly planted on both sides of the cockpit. This is how you will manage the boat’s side-to-side motion, if any, once you’re on the water.

Avoid packing the boat too full when you’ve found your ideal location. Your body should fit snugly enough to allow you to steer the kayak yet loosely enough to allow you to get out of it safely in an emergency.

Got It! When Do I Start Kayaking in the Galapagos?
